The New Volunteer Coordinator: Let me introduce... myself.

Hi! I'm Herlin Karina.

I am 24 years old, I am from Olancho, the youngest daughter in my family and a person with too many interests for the hours in the day. I am 1.77 meters tall, so I am almost always one of the tallest people wherever I go.

If there is one thing that defines me, it is that I rarely pass up the chance to learn something new. I enjoy starting courses on widely varied topics; in fact, I once took a barista course—because why not learn how to make a great cup of coffee? I love visiting coffee shops, trying their drinks, and discovering new spots. I also enjoy spending hours reading, doing puzzles, singing, or writing in my journal, where I try to capture a little bit of my daily life.

Fashion has always been one of my interests, although lately I haven't dedicated as much time to it as I would like. I also have a special passion for makeup and dream of becoming a professional makeup artist—specifically in editorial makeup and the opportunity to be part of important days in people's lives. A few months ago, I also discovered that cooking for others can be a beautiful way to show affection.

In my spare time, I might go from reading essays and articles on Substack to laughing at Instagram Reels. I enjoy cultural events, art exhibitions, mental health fairs, book presentations and activities that allow me to discover something new. My favorite book is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; I especially enjoy magical realism, and I have a collection of unicorns.

I also have a very special community of friends—we call ourselves the "Fansys." They are the people close to me who listen patiently whenever I show up with a new story, an unexpected idea or a project I want to start. I deeply value those friendships that make space for our conversations, our spur-of-the-moment ideas and the different versions of ourselves.

Pedagogy, psychology and the desire to learn

During my university years, I have had the opportunity to volunteer for community projects and complete internships in the field of education. These experiences have allowed me to meet wonderful people, learn about realities different from my own, and discover that many of the things I enjoy most share a common thread: working with people, learning from them, and contributing—from where I stand—to making their experiences a little better.

Faith, service, and the little things

Faith has been part of my life since I was born. I grew up attending church, and my relationship with God remains an important part of who I am and the decisions I make. One of my favorite verses is Galatians 3:28, which reminds us that we are all one in Christ Jesus.

For a long time, I have found volunteering to be a way to put into practice the things I consider important. Serving has allowed me to hear stories, build friendships, learn from others, and discover that the most meaningful experiences often stem from simple actions and the efforts of people who choose to contribute their time and talents.

That is why starting this "Kariaventura" as Volunteer Coordinator makes me especially happy. In my prayers, I always asked God that when a job opportunity arose, it would be something I could enjoy, something that would allow me to serve and hold meaning for me. Today, I feel that this opportunity encompasses many of the things I had asked for: meeting new people, supporting those who wish to serve, learning together and contributing to the growth of our community.

I am very excited about everything we can build, the stories I don't know yet, and the things I will learn along the way. I know there will be challenges, new ideas and plenty of work to do, but I also hope there will be room to laugh, share a good coffee and celebrate every small step forward.

In the end, I am Herlin Karina: A student with many interests, an enthusiastic reader, a lifelong learner, a friend who always has a new story to tell and a person who seeks to find purpose in the things she does.
